Roof Warranty Guide for Leander, TX Homeowners
A roof warranty usually comes in two parts. The shingle maker covers defects in its materials, and your roofer covers the labor. Neither one pays for hail. That’s what homeowners insurance is for. In Leander, our workmanship warranty terms are written into every estimate, so you can read them before you sign.

What a Roof Warranty Actually Covers
Most people hear “lifetime” and assume the whole roof is covered for as long as they own the house. That’s rarely how it works.
What you actually get is a stack of separate promises, made by different companies, each with its own fine print.

On a typical Leander home in ZIP 78641, you’ll deal with up to three layers:
- The manufacturer’s standard material warranty. It covers defects in the shingles and accessories themselves.
- An enhanced or system warranty. Some makers sell longer, broader coverage, but only through roofers in their contractor programs.
- The roofer’s workmanship warranty. It covers mistakes in how the roof was put on.
Knowing which layer covers what saves a lot of frustration later. A leak caused by a bad flashing detail is a labor problem.
A shingle that blisters from a factory defect is a material problem. Hail damage is neither one.
Shingle Warranty vs Workmanship Warranty
Here’s the short version of who stands behind what.
| Warranty type | Who backs it | What it usually covers | What it usually leaves out |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard shingle warranty | The shingle manufacturer | Manufacturing defects in its products | Installation errors, hail, ventilation problems |
| Enhanced or system warranty | The manufacturer, through a program contractor | Longer or broader coverage on a full system of its products | Varies by tier; still excludes storms |
| Workmanship warranty | Your roofer | Leaks and failures caused by installation | Storm damage, other trades’ work |
| Homeowners insurance | Your insurer | Sudden storm damage like hail and wind | Wear and age; policy terms vary |
The standard shingle warranty
GAF says its basic limited warranty covers manufacturing defects “with no additional purchase or registration needed,” according to its article on transferring a roof warranty. That’s the baseline most homeowners get automatically.
The catch is the exclusions. GAF’s published roofing system limited warranty lists hail, fire and winds over the stated speed as excluded acts of nature. It also excludes improper installation and inadequate ventilation.
Enhanced and system warranties
Makers also offer upgraded coverage when you install a full system of their products. The same GAF article says its Golden Pledge warranty is only available through GAF Master Elite contractors.
Owens Corning works the same way. Its Platinum Protection warranty terms require the whole roofing system to be installed by a Platinum Preferred Contractor, who must register it with Owens Corning within 60 days of installation.
CertainTeed says a credentialed contractor can offer extended warranties that may cover labor, disposal and workmanship. On its SureStart PLUS chart, only the higher tiers list workmanship coverage.
So enhanced coverage depends on two things: using the maker’s matched products and hiring a roofer in that maker’s program. If that coverage matters to you, ask the roofer which program they’re in and confirm it on the manufacturer’s own contractor locator.
The workmanship warranty
Most leaks on a newer roof come from installation, not bad shingles. Nails driven high, caulk used where metal flashing belongs, a missing kick-out at a wall. A standard shingle warranty won’t pay for any of that.
That’s why the workmanship warranty matters so much. It’s the roofer’s own promise, and it’s only as good as the company behind it. Get it in writing, with the length, what’s covered and how to file a claim.
We don’t quote warranty terms over the phone or on this page. Our workmanship warranty terms are written into every estimate, so you can compare them side by side with other bids before you decide.
What Can Void a Roof Warranty
Coverage can be weakened or denied by things that happen long before you file a claim. Based on the manufacturer documents linked above, these are the big ones:
- Poor attic ventilation. GAF excludes damage from inadequate ventilation. Owens Corning’s Platinum terms require a ventilated roof deck with balanced intake and exhaust.
- Installation that doesn’t follow the maker’s instructions. Nail placement and sealing details matter for wind coverage.
- Mixing brands. Enhanced coverage depends on a full system from one maker. Owens Corning’s terms don’t cover other companies’ components, such as flashing and fasteners.
- Repairing before you notify the maker. GAF says to notify it within 30 days of noticing a problem and not to repair or replace products first.
- Missing paperwork. Claims require proof of the installation date and ownership.
Texas heat and ventilation
Ventilation deserves extra attention here. The Leander area averages about 93 days a year above 90°F, and a hot, stuffy attic bakes shingles from below.
Many homes in Crystal Falls, Bryson, Travisso and Mason Hills, on both the Williamson County and Travis County sides of town, have complex rooflines where intake and exhaust are easy to get wrong. Our guide to attic ventilation in Texas explains how to check yours. Fixing ventilation during a replacement is far easier than arguing about it during a claim.
Transferable Roof Warranty Rules
If you’re buying or selling a home, a transferable roof warranty can be a selling point. But transfers come with conditions.
GAF’s roofing system warranty says it can be transferred only once, and the second owner must notify GAF in writing within one year of the property transfer. Owens Corning’s Platinum terms also allow one transfer, with a 60-day window after the sale. In both cases, coverage can shrink if the transfer happens late in the warranty’s life.
Buyers should ask the seller for the original contract, invoices and any registration certificate. Without those, a transferable roof warranty is hard to use.
Roof Warranty vs Insurance: Hail and Wind
This is where Leander homeowners get caught most often. Hail is common here, and the major makers’ warranty documents exclude it.
StormerSite has logged 105 hail reports within 10 miles of Leander since 2004, and 73 of them fell in April or May. On May 16, 2025, hail up to 3 inches fell in north and central Leander, with 2.75-inch hail measured in Deerbrooke and 2-inch hail in Carneros Ranch.
Damage like that goes through your homeowners insurance, not your roof warranty. Many Texas policies carry a separate wind and hail deductible of 1% to 3% of the home’s insured value.
Texas law on storm claims
The claim belongs to you. Texas Insurance Code 4102.163 bars a roofer from adjusting or negotiating your claim, and Business and Commerce Code 27.02 bars a roofer from waiving, absorbing or rebating your deductible.
What a roofer can do is document the damage. We take dated photos and can meet your adjuster on site if you ask. Our Texas roof insurance claim guide covers the rest.
Class 4 shingles and roof warranty Texas questions
Impact-resistant shingles don’t turn hail into a warranty issue either. A UL 2218 Class 4 shingle withstands a 2-inch steel ball dropped in testing without cracking, and some insurers give a discount for it. After installation, the contractor completes TDI form PC068 for the insurer.
Roof Warranty Paperwork to Keep
Most denied claims come down to missing records. Here’s what to ask for and file away after a new roof.
- Get the written estimate and contract. It should name the shingle line, accessories and the workmanship warranty terms.
- Ask for proof of purchase. Invoices showing the products and install date support any material claim.
- Confirm registration. Ask whether an enhanced warranty applies and who registers it. Get the confirmation in writing.
- Keep dated photos. Before, during and after photos show decking, flashing and ventilation that get covered up.
- Do a walk-through. Our new roof inspection checklist shows what to look at once the crew is done.
- Store it where a buyer can find it. A folder with the contract, invoices and photos makes a transfer simple.
Questions to Ask Before You Sign
Any roofer should answer these without hesitating:
- Which roof warranty applies to the shingles, and is it standard or enhanced?
- Who registers it, and when will I get proof?
- How long is your workmanship warranty, and is it written into the estimate?
- Will every component come from one manufacturer?
- How will you handle attic ventilation?
- If I sell the house, how does the transfer work?

Roof Warranty Questions From Leander Homeowners
Does a roof warranty cover hail damage?
Generally no. Manufacturer documents from GAF and Owens Corning list hail as an excluded act of nature. Hail and wind damage is handled through your homeowners insurance, subject to your wind and hail deductible.
What is the difference between a shingle warranty and a workmanship warranty?
A shingle warranty comes from the manufacturer and covers defects in its products. A workmanship warranty comes from your roofer and covers installation mistakes, like bad flashing or nailing. You want both, in writing.
Do I need to register my roof warranty?
It depends on the coverage. GAF says its standard warranty needs no added registration, while Owens Corning’s Platinum Protection must be registered by the installing contractor within 60 days. Ask your roofer who registers yours and get proof.
Is a roof warranty transferable when I sell my house?
Often, but usually only once and within a set window. GAF requires the new owner to notify it in writing within one year of the sale. Coverage can be reduced if the transfer happens later in the warranty’s life.
How long is your workmanship warranty?
Our workmanship warranty terms are written into every estimate we give. That way you see the exact terms in writing before any work starts, and you can compare them with other bids.
